What is the amber glass stack?

The amber glass stack is a three-layer UV print finish tailored for bottles made of amber glass. It starts with a white primer layer to ensure colours show up vividly, even on the dark amber background. On top of the white, we add your full-colour branding, graphics or legal panels. The final layer is a hard-wearing, clear varnish seal designed to survive the jar test, whether it’s getting boxed on the East Rand or handled in a Cape Town market.

This specific stack suits beverage, skincare and promo lines that use amber bottles and want consistent presentation across print runs. Our UV process means the print cures instantly, so there’s no smudging or waiting for inks to dry, which helps during hectic weeks or when load-shedding threatens schedule slips.

Who does this finish suit (and who should look elsewhere)?

The amber glass stack is best for brand owners and operators in craft drinks, pharmaceutical drops, natural beauty, and promo bottling who use amber or brown glass. If your brand colours must always match across batches, despite glass supply shifts, this stack gives you control. It handles the hard knocks of Gauteng warehouses and still looks premium on a Polokwane shelf.

However, it’s not for lines using clear glass bottles or plastics (see our clear PET primer for those), or if you rely on full-wrap metallic effects (our metallic accent stack is better here). If your closure is a key branding element, match with our closure match set.

How the amber glass stack works in practice

We run the white underprint first, laying it down exactly where your logo, text or artwork needs to pop. Next, our UV system prints the colour layer, fine-tuned so reds, blues and greens don’t get lost in the brown glass. Last, we cure a gloss or matte varnish over the print, giving extra scratch and rub resistance.

On the floor, this means your bottles come off the line ready for packing, without needing extra drying racks or slow manual handling. Labels won’t lift during container transport from Durban to Bloemfontein, and bottles won’t leave inky fingerprints on carton dividers. For factories dealing with Highveld dust or coastal humidity, the cured stack holds up.

Short worked example: A Highveld kombucha line

A kombucha bottler in Germiston fills 330 ml amber glass bottles. They need crisp, colourful labels with batch info that won’t scuff when stored in stacked crates. We run their design as a white+colour+varnish stack. The result: bottles loaded for Jo’burg delivery with no print rubbing off, even after forklift handling and light rain during offload.

Their operator emails us the bottle’s outer diameter, height and a flat PDF of the label art. We test, tweak the white coverage for their specific glass shade, and print a small approval run. Once approved, full runs are booked. Most weeks, there’s a few days’ lead time for setup, depending on line changeovers.

Checklist: What to prepare before you email

Speed up your sample or order by sending the right info. This avoids extra rounds and keeps the floor moving, whether you’re in Gauteng or shipping to Durban.

Pitfalls and practice notes

Be aware: Bottle shade can shift between glass batches, which may affect colour matching. Always check a sample on your current bottle stock for best results. Ink and varnish adhesion is tuned for true glass, not plastic, don’t use this stack for PET or polycarbonate. The varnish is durable but sharp metal or sand still scratches, especially during coastal freight. If you need extra grip or tactile feel, add a soft-touch varnish layer.

If you supply recycled bottles, clean off all traces of old glue or paper, or the print may not cure tightly. For first-timers, see our FAQ and finishes overview or the catalogue for a fit check.
