Metallic accent

A crisp metallic accent draws attention to bottle details and logos, especially on spirits and premium gift packs. Our selective UV process keeps the shine in place under handling.

What metallic accent is and where it works best

Metallic accent is a precise UV-applied finish which delivers a controlled, metallic highlight to specific elements on glass or plastic bottles. The effect is popular with South African spirits, liqueurs and premium gift packs looking for a flash of luxury without full-coverage foiling. You get punchy gold, silver or coloured metallic touches on text, crests or shapes, while leaving other parts of the bottle matte or clear. It suits labels and direct-to-bottle decoration where detail and brand visibility matter but budgets or packing requirements rule out full metallisation. Retailers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban use it to set apart collector’s runs and limited editions.

Who benefits most, and where it’s not a good match

Metallic accent thrives for brands needing standout shelf presence or gifting appeal, especially shorter runs that justify the extra finish. Spirits, perfumes, craft condiments, or promo bottles for launches in Gauteng or the Winelands take well to this method. It also suits marketing teams who want a quick sample cycle without outsourcing full runs to large converters.

On the other hand, it’s not ideal for products packed in heavy friction environments (like high-speed local dairy filling lines) or where entire surface wraparound is required. Teams needing mass, low-cost, fully covered metallic bottles usually look elsewhere, as do those wanting ink coverage on highly curved surfaces, which limits adhesion.

How the process works on the South African floor

The metallic accent finish uses targeted digital UV application. Your artwork is separated into layers so only the metallic areas receive the reflective ink on the line. This is handled on our Swiss-precise systems, built for South African 230 V mains and three-phase supply. Our finish is factory-floor proven to stick through packing, transit, and shelf life, withstanding Highveld dust, Cape humidity, and routine handling. It attaches best to smooth, dust-free surfaces. Our operators regularly check that the metallic doesn’t rub off, especially when prepping for bulk delivery to bottle shops or promo events.

Example: Upgrading a Cape gin with a metallic crest

A Cape Town craft gin team wants their flagship 750 ml bottle to look premium for the upcoming festive rush. They send us the vector artwork for their crest, specifying gold metallic for the crown and banner, with the rest remaining crisp CMYK. We separate their artwork, apply the metallic layers, and produce a physical sample in our Germiston bay. The gin team reviews it under natural and fluorescent light to check the reflective pop and adhesion. When they’re happy, they confirm the short run. Bottles go out to boutique liquor stores in Durban and Gqeberha with the metallic finish surviving shelf touch and Cape coastal air.

Preparing for a metallic accent job

If you’re interested, plan ahead to avoid common redraws and production delays. We recommend having your artwork in a vector format (such as AI or PDF) with metallic areas called out in a separate spot colour or layer. Check your bottle surfaces for dust, oil, or residues and let us know if your run will ship upcountry or to coastal towns so we can advise on any special prep. Refer to our FAQ and finishes guide for more technical details and samples.

Pitfalls and what to watch

Common issues with metallic accent are rushed artwork prep, lack of bottle surface cleaning, or asking for large wraparound metallics that this method cannot achieve. Bottles stored near greasy machinery or handled with bare hands may show patchy adhesion after print. For shapes with deep curves or embossing, metallic coverage may appear less crisp. Always factor in municipal power dips and load-shedding schedules if you’re scheduling tight delivery windows. We can advise on the finish and expected handling but always recommend a sample test for new shapes.

If you’re not sure whether your project is a good fit, see how metallic accent compares with matte panel, soft-touch varnish, gloss varnish, or opaque white underbase available on our finishes page.
