What the matte UV panel finish does

Matte UV panel is a factory-applied finish that creates a low-gloss zone on clear PET bottles. It softens reflections and minimises glare under shop lights or sunlight, so your branding, text and graphics stay easy to read from every angle. Matte panels also hide fingerprints and smudges, giving each bottle a cleaner look after handling. The surface feels slightly textured, not slippery or shiny, which can help with grip during packaging and retail restocking. This is not a wraparound effect; matte is applied as a defined panel, ideal for labelling areas or brand graphics.

This finish is UV-cured for South African conditions. It stays put in boxes, on shelves and in transit, even when exposed to Highveld dust, coastal humidity or fluctuating warehouse temperatures. The matte panel is often used for premium craft drinks, personal care ranges and promo bottles that need a sophisticated look without the distraction of shine.

Who uses matte panels and who should not

Matte UV panels suit brands that want a refined, non-reflective look and want their labels or direct-printed artwork to remain the hero. Boutique beverage makers in Gauteng industrial parks, skincare labs in Durban and custom promo projects for Gqeberha launches often choose matte when their graphics have fine detail that must be visible in glass-fronted retail fridges or on open-plan display islands.

If your design relies on high-gloss, metallic or holographic effects, or if bottles need to show off clarity and shimmer, a matte finish can mute those features. Full-matte bottles can look flat in poor lighting. If you want both effects, ask about combining matte panels with gloss varnish, LED UV CMYK or opaque white underbase to build a layered finish.

Matte panel in practice: a worked example

A Polokwane craft juice company, bottling clear PET in 500 ml and 1 litre, needs their branding panel to stay legible after transport from the warehouse to spaza shops. They ask us to print a matte panel down the front, just wide enough for their full-colour logo and nutritional info. The matte finish kills the sharp glare from strip lighting, so the text stays readable whether the bottle sits in a coldroom or on a market shelf at midday.

In our Germiston workshop, we test their sample bottles, checking for PET grade, pre-treatment and print area dimensions. During production, matte UV is applied in a single pass as defined by their artwork. After curing, operators test for abrasion and fingerprint resistance before the bottles go on to filling. The result is a bottle with a clear, readable label zone that looks consistent from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

Checklist: prepare before you send a message through our contact form

A short preparation before contacting us will save time on both sides. The more detail you provide, the more accurate our advice. Please double-check your bottle and design specs before you email our team.

Pitfalls to avoid and tips from the factory floor

Matte UV panels only work as well as the prep. Poor PET cleaning or handling with oily gloves can cause patchy adhesion, which shows up after curing. Make sure bottles are dust-free, especially in high-dust zones around Joburg and Bloemfontein.

Do not expect a matte panel to mask heavy scratches or deep mould seams. Matte helps disguise minor handling marks, but deeper flaws remain visible. If you plan to combine finishes, check with our team about print order, some combos need testing and sample approval first to avoid registration mishaps or unexpected colour shifts.

Avoid designing matte across deep curves or embossing; flat or gently curved label areas give the best results. For bottles stored in coastal Durban or Cape Town, let us know about high humidity, the curing process can need adjustment. If in doubt, ask for samples before full production.
