What is an opaque white underbase?

An opaque white underbase is a dense layer of UV-cured white ink applied directly onto glass, PET or coated aluminium bottles before colour or detail printing. It sits flat and grips tight, giving labels a bright, punchy backdrop. The finish works by blocking background show-through, so colours read true even on dark, green or amber bottles. At our Germiston bay, we apply this underbase to help local craft beverage, fragrance or skincare lines get the best out of their branding artwork.

Who needs a white underbase, and who doesn’t?

You need this underbase if you print colour, metallic or CMYK layers onto any substrate darker than cream. PET bottles, amber glass, dark closures or textured aluminium all benefit from a solid base. It is well suited to small batch craft beer, spirits, kombucha, skincare serums and short-run promo lines looking for high shelf impact. You likely do not need this finish for clear labels printed on bottles with white backgrounds, standard white closures, or where transparency is part of the design.

How it works on South African lines

Our UV white is precisely formulated and InkFlow-controlled. This means every bottle gets a consistent hit, even on variable runs and irregular shapes common in local craft or short-run jobs. The underbase cures instantly under LED, so Highveld dust from Germiston or Gqeberha won’t settle and spoil the finish. Unlike some systems, this white does not chalk or turn brittle under Gauteng winter dryness or coastal humidity in Durban. It is engineered to survive three-phase power swings and even short load-shedding cycles if you run backup mains. There’s no soft rub-off during packing or road transit, so your stock arrives sharp on any shelf.

Example: Opaque white for a kombucha launch

A new kombucha producer in Polokwane wanted bold turquoise and gold on recycled amber glass. Their brief had fine lines, layered type, and a soft gloss on top. We ran a dense white underbase, then layered LED UV CMYK and gloss varnish. The white layer locked the colours in, so even in harsh shop strip-lighting and after a round trip in a hot Gauteng delivery van, the detail stayed crisp. With no chalking or rub-off, the batch passed their shelf-life test without fading.

How to prepare before contacting us

Before you email our team at our contact form about an opaque white underbase, have your sample bottle and artwork ready. Specific details cut down on back-and-forth and help us give a floor-ready answer. If your bottle comes from a local mould or supplier, let us know. We’ll ask about run size, handling conditions, and any previous experience with failing whites. If you’re testing multiple finishes, see our finishes overview or ask about the sample programme.

Common pitfalls and how we handle them

Not all whites are the same. Some imported inks chalk quickly in Cape Town fog or crack in Highveld dry spells. Overloading the underbase leads to thick edges and poor closure fit. Poor bottle surface prep, like oily PET or factory film, blocks adhesion. Our bench tests each run for sticky points. If your artwork needs extra punch or special effects, check if clear PET primer or amber stack gives better results. We’re direct about what works. If we see likely rub-off or fitment problems from sample bottles, we’ll say so before you commit.
