Frost resist is a specialist UV finish that creates an etched, frosted appearance on glass bottles and jars. The effect is comparable to sandblasting or acid-etching in look, but applied with digital precision and none of the hazards. It leaves a fine-grained, translucent layer that won't flake or rub off even with the Highveld’s dry grit or in the jostle between Cape Town and Gauteng branches. We tune resist thickness and opacity according to your product line, whether you’re bottling gin, launching a skincare serum or prepping promo runs for expos and liquor stores.
Producers aiming for a refined, downplayed look on clear glass usually pick frost resist. It’s especially popular in craft spirits, wellness, and premium non-alcoholic beverages, plus boutique cosmetics where the frosted effect supports a matte label or subdued branding. If your label needs to pop with metallics or high-gloss varnish, resist might not give the contrast you want unless you combine it with metallic accent or gloss varnish. Frost resist doesn’t suit bottles that must stay fully clear for product visibility, or wraps that need very high colour density over broad areas.
On our floor in Germiston, frost resist goes on after the clear PET primer, where it bonds directly to the glass. This is handled by our precision-built UV systems that keep the resist even from neck to base, even on trickier bottle shapes. Operators pay careful attention during runs when humidity is high in Durban or when that Highveld dust sneaks in the air, both can affect how sharply the edge of the frost layer forms. We control each batch so that repeat production in Bloemfontein or Gqeberha doesn’t surprise you with a shade difference or patchy effect. Each order comes with honest samples so you can see how it takes on your actual stock.
A craft gin brand in Johannesburg wanted bottles with a frosted shoulder and clear base to show off the spirit. We received their 750 ml flint glass and primed each with our PET base. The frost resist was digitally masked to the upper half, leaving a clean edge above the filled level. During the first run, operators spotted a faint haze line from a previous batch’s rinse water, quick action and some pre-wiped samples helped lock in a crisp result. The finished look survived a week in a busy Gauteng cash-and-carry, with no rubbing or peeling even after several rounds of offloading and restacking.
Before you send a message through our contact form with your order or sampling request, prepare the following to help us give you straight feedback and an accurate turnaround.
Make sure your glass is clean and free from grease, label adhesive or water spots. If you’re sending stock from Durban or Gqeberha, double-check for salt or transport residue. Be clear if you want the frost effect across the whole bottle, in a mask, or paired with another finish such as soft-touch varnish or a closure match set. Please have a vector logo or artwork ready for any panel decoration, and mention if you prefer a sharp or feathered edge. It’s helpful to say how many units you expect to run most weeks and whether you’ll need just samples or a full series.
List any upcoming packaging changes, if the bottle spec is changing, it’s better to sort that first. For advice on which finishes work best for your industry, browse our use-cases section.
Frost resist is forgiving but not universal. If glass is dusty or has any trace of oil, resist layers can lift or show streaks, especially after exposure to Gauteng’s temperature swings or municipal rinse water. On bottles with deep emboss or heavy taper, you may see slight thinning along recesses, something the operator can often offset, but not always for every geometry. It’s not the best pick if your product must shine with full-gloss or if you need 100% clarity. When in doubt, ask about a test run first and we’ll send a sample for review before you commit to a full batch.
